Testimonies:
Takin’ a Walk: In this segment, Division Manager Of Ministries, Philemon Hayibor, walks down a hallway at Pacific Garden Mission with Joseph Thompson, a participant in the New Life Discipleship Ministry, as they talk about Joseph’s journey of transformation.
Leanne: She shares how she came to Chicago from Detroit seeking a fresh start after a difficult past marked by trauma, instability, and broken relationships. With nowhere to go, she prayed and was led to Pacific Garden Mission, where she has now been for nearly two years.
Bejor: This Chicago native shares how a lifelong struggle with depression, rooted in a difficult upbringing and lack of support, led him down a path of hopelessness, broken relationships, and ultimately homelessness. Despite pursuing meaningful work and financial success, he found that neither purpose nor money could satisfy the deeper emptiness he felt. After being evicted, he came to Pacific Garden Mission, where an encounter with Pastor Phil led him to join the New Life Discipleship Program. Since then, Bejor describes experiencing a profound transformation, discovering that true peace, hope, and purpose are found not in worldly pursuits, but in surrendering to Jesus Christ.
Sermon: “Joseph: Healing the Past Without Becoming Bitter”: In this sermon, Pastor Phil teaches how to deal with deep wounds and past hurt without allowing bitterness to take root, using the life of Joseph as a biblical model. He explains that forgiveness begins internally, not through immediate reconciliation, and warns that unresolved anger can lead to spiritual, emotional, and relational consequences. Walking through Joseph’s story, Pastor Phil outlines a clear process: first resolving hurt in the heart, then confronting the past without avoidance, and finally using wisdom in reconciliation by discerning whether genuine change has occurred. Despite being deeply wronged, Joseph chose not to seek revenge but trusted God’s greater purpose, recognizing that what was meant for evil, God used for good. The message ultimately challenges listeners to release bitterness, trust God with justice, and find healing by viewing their past through the lens of His sovereignty.
