In 1941, understanding the overwhelming need to reach out to Chicago's homeless women, Pacific Garden Mission began a small but effective women's ministry. The ministry flourished and today has grown to require a separate facility called Gospel League Home. This larger facility houses over-night female guests as well as women with children in need of accommodations over a longer period of time.
Gospel League Home is located about two miles northwest of Pacific Garden Mission, at 955 W. Grand Avenue. This four-story brick building was originally a settlement house in the early 1900's. It was later established as a ministry to needy women and children. It was turned over to PGM in the 1980's and has been renovated to meet the needs of the tenants. It provides dorm-like housing for about 150 women, many with children. Because of the number of women and children who reside there and the amount of work it takes to keep such a home functioning well, everyone helps with the upkeep whether it be cooking, cleaning, or doing laundry. Depending on the number of residents, between 5,000 and 7,000 meals are served at Gospel League Home each month.
A woman who comes to PGM's Gospel League Home is provided with a shower, food, clothing, and overnight accommodations. Each woman is counseled to determine her specific needs and is helped accordingly. But more importantly, she is given an opportunity to experience the life-changing love of God. She witnesses this unconditional love in the lives of the staff she meets and also in the fellowship of the evening Gospel Services.
Women who choose to receive God's free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ are invited to join the Resident Bible Program. Through daily Bible classes and evening Gospel Services, the women and children learn first hand of the God who took them from despair into a life of promise. But the training doesn't stop there. The women are also offered the opportunity to attend the Women's Old Lighthouse Bible Academy. These classes are conducted at the Gospel League Home and consist of practical and biblical training to help each woman mature in her relationship with Christ, her family and society. Many of these women leave the Mission and move on to become wonderful testimonies of God's grace all over the country.
We need you! Are you interested in joining the ministry of GLH? Female staff is needed in the areas of security, women’s and children ministries. For consideration candidates must have extensive knowledge of the KJV Bible, previous experience with the homeless, and a heart and passion for serving Christ.
